-
Did you want to be an architect when you were a child?
As a child, I was into painting and sculptureÂ….when I saw that as sculpture or a painter I was not going to make a good living, I looked for the closest thing and I discovered architecture as a very early age.
-
How old were you?
I was 14 years old.
-
One definition of architecture speaks to the art of practice of designing and building structures, especially habitable ones. How does the potential habitant weigh on how you design and structure the building?
It is one hundred percent important. We as architects have an obligation to the potential habitant. The duty as an architect is to provide the user with the functional and aesthetic space to functionate, to live and to work.
-
If you were to be known for a certain style of architecture, what would you want that to be and why?
I donÂ’t know if I want to be known for a specific style of architecture. I like modern architecture; IÂ’m living in the year 2000. I try the use the materials and technology available at the moment, and I sort of donÂ’t go back and copy things in the past. I see myself as a modern, cotemporary architect.
-
For the benefit of us lay people, what sort of research goes into the plan and design of a building?
A program is given to us; we as architects know the different areas of this city. We live in the Island of Manhattan. Manhattan is a small place, but it has many different characteristics and neighborhoods. This program depends on both the marketing people and the prospect buyers and on neighborhood according to where the building is located. Secondly, in terms of the site itself, we have to build all of the structures, so we have to consider how to orient the apartments in a way to take advantage of the light and air. We have to follow the cityÂ’s regulations to the letter in order to get to the final result.
-
Just out of curiosity, how hands on are you in regard to a given project; say youÂ’re designing a high rise building, would you make a number of visits while construction is in progress?
I have my hands on the design stage: from very beginning of the project through the design development I am one hundred percent involved. After that, it goes into the construction documents phase and I am still involved as much. During construction, my people go down more than I do to the actual site. I do visit the site a few times, but my involvement is more in the design stage.
-
What would your dream project be, whether itÂ’s in New York or Outside New York?
It would probably be a master plan for a big town or city, where I would be the architect, for different kinds of buildings where we have the opportunity to design not only residential, but also museums and hotels. I was trained as an architect to design all kinds of different buildings. It tends to be that if you do something well, everyone thinks thatÂ’s the only thing you can do well.
-
Are you saying youÂ’d rather not be known for one specific type of architecture?
Trying to break into other areas is very difficult. People tend to come to me because they are aware of my knowledge of residential architecture. But as an architect, I miss doing other kinds of buildings. So that will be my dream – to do all different kinds of buildings.
-
I read in a poem recently that the architecture of snow is like the architecture of the storm itself, and of the landscape (Michele Glazer “Aggregate of Disturbances”). How would you define architecture?
Architecture is a response to cultural need. It can be a creation of arrangement of space in order to shelter functions with the use of materials and technology available at the moment. They will be used to create buildings.
-
What is your favorite iconic structure?
My favorite building is the Chrysler building, I love that building. I like art deco buildings.
-
What would be your favorite architectural city?
I am living in my favorite architectural city.
-
A lot of painters and writers are lost when they finish work on a particular project. Do you feel that way when you finish a project, that you are saying goodbye to it?
On the contrary, actually seeing the buildings built has always been my dream as an architect. I feel unsatisfied if the building I design is not built. When my buildings are finished, itÂ’s my biggest satisfaction as an architect.
